Liposomal Zinc Bioavailability Study
Zinc is an essential micronutrient that is obtained through our diet. This mineral is helpful for supporting immunity, cognition, vision, and reducing oxidative stress on the body. The absorption of zinc can be negatively impacted by what we eat, other minerals trying to be absorbed in the gut, and gastric acids. Liposomes may help increase absorption in the body and improve serum zinc status.
Study Objectives
To compare the bioavailability of liposomal and non-liposomal (standard) zinc ascorbate supplements.
Method
The study was a two-group, randomized controlled trial.
- Group A: Single dose of 25mg liquid liposomal Zinc Ascorbate supplement
- Group B: Single dose of 25mg non-liposomal Zinc Ascorbate powder dissolved in 100mL of water
Participants
Twenty healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. They were randomly and evenly assigned to one of the two supplementation groups. The participants were between the ages of 20-50 years old, did not have any chronic medical conditions, did not have any presence of acute illness, were within the normal BMI category (18.5-24.9 kg/m2), and did not use any drugs or dietary supplements on a frequent and/or mandatory basis.
Blood Sampling
Participants were given their respective dose of zinc ascorbate while fasting. Blood samples were collected at baseline (before supplement administration), 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours after supplementation. Laboratory tests evaluated serum zinc status in the blood at each timepoint.
Results
Results demonstrated that ActiNovo liquid liposomal zinc formula has a higher bioavailability that the non-liposomal zinc supplement
- ActiNovo liposomal zinc ascorbate was found to be 3.82 times more bioavailable than non-liposomal powder zinc ascorbate.
- The liposomal zinc formula was able to significantly increase serum zinc at 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours compared to the non-liposomal zinc.
Key Takeaways
- Zinc is an essential mineral that is consumed through the diet or through nutritional supplements. Absorption can be impacted by digestive enzymes and other minerals in the gut, which can lower overall absorption.
- ActiNovo liposomal zinc has a higher bioavailability than a standard, non-liposomal zinc formulation.
- ActiNovo liposomal zinc was able to maintain a higher serum zinc value for a longer period of time than the non-liposomal zinc.
