Liposomal Quercetin

Liposomales Quercetin

Quercetin Bioavailability Study

Quercetin is a natural plant extract known for its antioxidant properties and its ability to naturally relieve allergic symptoms. Due to its water solubility, the natural bioavailability of this substance is limited, meaning that humans are not able to take full advantage of its effectiveness.

Study Objective

To evaluate the bioavailability of a liposomal quercetin supplement compared to a non-liposomal (standard) quercetin supplement.

Method

The study was a two-group, randomized control trial.

  • Group A: Single dose of 250mg liposomal quercetin supplement.
  • Group B: Single dose of 250mg standard quercetin supplement.

Participants

Twenty healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. They were randomly and equally assigned to one of the two supplementation groups. Certain exclusion criteria were applied: Participants had a minimum age of 20 years and a maximum age of 50 years, no chronic diseases, a BMI within the normal range (18.5-24.9 kg/m2), no acute diseases and no regular use of medication or supplements.

Blood Sampling

The fasting participants received an oral dose of 250 mg quercetin of the respective dietary supplement. Blood tests were taken before and after administration: At the beginning of the study (before the supplement was administered) and 1, 2, 3, 6 and 12 hours after. The blood was analyzed for the presence of quercetin-3-glucoside and quercetin-4'-glucoside in the plasma.

Results

The results of this study show that liposomal Quercetin from ActiNovo has a higher bioavailability than other quercetin preparations.

  • The liquid liposomal Quercetin had the highest bioavailability compared to a Quercetin supplements in tablet form.
  • Liquid liposomal quercetin had 12x higher bioavailability than conventional Quercetin in tablet form.
  • ActiNovo's liposomal quercetin achieved higher levels of Quercetin in plasma and maintained elevated levels for the longest time compared to conventional Quercetin.

Key Takeaways

  • Quercetin is a plant extract that has a naturally low bioavailability due to its hydrophobic structure
  • Liposomal quercetin from ActiNovo has a significantly higher bioavailability (x12) than a standard quercetin preparation.
  • Liposomal quercetin formulations are able to maintain a higher amount of quercetin in the blood over a longer period of time than standard quercetin formulations.
