Coenzyme Q10 Bioavailability Study
Coenzyme Q10 is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. This endogenous substance fulfills numerous functions in the body: it serves as an antioxidant and can help to reduce cell damage. The substance is also said to have a positive influence on skin ageing and a possible reduction in wrinkles. The body's own coenzyme Q10 production decreases with increasing age, so supplementation with the antioxidant is common.
Study Objective
Evaluation of the adsorption of liposomal coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinol) compared to a non-liposomal Q10 supplement over a period of 12 hours after administration of a 100 mg dose.
Method
This study was a randomized two-group study on the effect of liposomal and a non-liposomal NA coenzyme Q10 on the ubiquinol concentration in blood plasma.
Participants
Twenty healthy volunteers were included in the study. They were randomly divided equally into one of the two supplementation groups. The participants had a minimum age of 20 years and a maximum age of 50 years, no chronic diseases, a BMI within the normal range (18.5-24.9 kg/m2), no acute diseases and no regular intake of medication or dietary supplements.
Blood Sampling
The fasting participants received an oral dose of 250 mg coenzyme Q10 of the supplement. Blood samples were taken before and after ingestion: At the beginning of the study (before the supplement was administered), 1, 2, 5, 6 and 12 hours after. The blood was analyzed for the presence of ubiquinol in the blood plasma.
Results
The results show that liposomal coenzyme Q10 from ActiNovo has a higher bioavailability than a non-liposomal coenzyme Q10 preparation
- The liquid liposomal coenzyme Q10 had a higher bioavailability compared to the Q10 preparation in tablet form
- The liquid liposomal coenzyme Q10 had a 3x higher bioavailability than the conventional Q10 in tablet form
- The initial values of coenzyme Q10 were basically the same in both groups. Over time, however, the value of liposomal coenzyme Q10 from ActiNovo increased by 8 times the initial value
Key takeaways:
- Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble substance that is often used as a dietary supplement due to its direct involvement in our body's energy production.
- Coenzyme Q10 has a naturally low bioavailability.
- Liposomal coenzyme Q10 has a significantly higher bioavailability (3x) than a standard coenzyme Q10 preparation.
- Liposomal coenzyme Q10 formulations are able to maintain a higher amount of Q10 in the blood over a longer period of time than standard Q10 formulations.
